HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR PROJECT MANAGEMENT CONSULTANCY!

It can be hard to trust your projects to an outside team of consultants. Every project is, after all, a reflection of your organisation your people and your brand. So what are some of the factors you need to consider when you start to look at outsourcing this vital function?

At Silver Litchi we have been in the project management arena for a considerable length of time, and we have worked across numerous industries and clients. We know what’s important to our clients and so we have collated five checklist items for you to review when you engage with an outsourced project management company.

  1. Does the company help you to build or amend your business strategy?

Any consultant company you work with needs to ask about your overall business strategy. They can’t operate in a vacuum and knowing where you want to go as a business will inform many of the project decisions that are made. No element of any project is too small not to be considered when seen as part of your overall business strategy.

  1. Reputation

Consider the reputation of the project management company you going to bring in to assist you. Are they well known, have they worked on projects that are similar to yours, and do they have a pedigree? One should definitely consider the consultancy’s reputation before bringing them in to project manage your own team.

  1. Skills count!

Every company is different and follows a different project management methodology. Some are Agile, some follow predictive, some follow Hybrid, but what is true for all of them is that you want a project management team on your side that has the right skills, experience and certifications. So check! Check that the consultancy has the correct certifications and are well versed in whatever methodology you are employing with your teams and within your PMO.

  1. Process

Ask your project management consultancy to run you through a typical project management life cycle as well as their processes. Remember that processes are completely independent of the methodology though the one will inform the other. For example, in an Agile environment, you can ask them to run through a typical sprint cycle, or even a retro or sprint planning. Process is methodical and will ensure that the work items are completed properly but it is also about ensuring that the process works within the company culture that you have employed.

  1. Value

Regardless of the project, any project management consultancy should add value to the overall PMO. When checking references ask about the value the team added to the greater project management team and office. Whether it’s assisting with creating templates, mentoring or training or even just being available and open to engaging with team members in a shared learning environment, there is value in having consultants – who have worked in a myriad of environments – share knowledge, and a consultancy with team members who are open to this can make all the difference to your experience.
